The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has retained its top ranking in the annual U.S. News & World Report hospital rankings for the 12th consecutive year. The rankings, which include the top 50 cancer centers in the nation, placed MD Anderson at the number one spot, followed by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
MD Anderson has been one of the top two hospitals in the nation for cancer care since the inaugural survey was published in 1990. The hospital’s president, Peter WT Pisters, MD, said the ranking is a tremendous honor and reflects the hospital’s commitment to making progress in its mission to end cancer.
The top five cancer hospitals in the nation, according to the rankings, are: University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston), Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York), Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center (Boston), Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota), and Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston).
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center held its number two spot, with its president and CEO, Selwyn M. Vickers, MD, saying the recognition reflects the extraordinary people of MSK and their goal of improving the lives of patients and families.
This year, U.S. News & World Report added regional cancer hospital rankings for the first time, extending its evaluations beyond the nationally ranked cancer centers. The magazine’s managing editor and chief of health analysis, Ben Harder, said the additional rankings aim to reach patients who may not live near one of the top 50 cancer centers.
The regional lists use the same scoring as the national ranking, and Harder said the expansion followed years of tracking outcomes at hospitals just outside the national top 50. He added that the hospitals on the regional lists are providing exceptionally good care.

Six cancer centers that did not make the top 50 rankings last year are now included on the list, including University of Chicago Medical Center, M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center, and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
These new rankings can help patients who may not have access to one of the top 50 cancer centers, as they provide information on the quality of care available in their local area. By considering these rankings, patients can make more informed decisions about their cancer treatment options and find the best care available to them.
